Bacteria Testing Program
When your community joins the Arundel Rivers Federation’s bacteria testing program, we will monitor microbial water quality at your waterfront recreational area. For a nominal cost per community, the Federation will provide weekly data on water safety for your members and their children. This program monitors Enterococci, fecal bacteria from mammal and bird waste that provide a reliable indicator of contamination in swimming and recreational waters.
Further information about the program can be found here.
Samples are collected weekly, on Wednesdays, between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at your waterfront area by a trained Arundel Rivers Federation representative. If you do not specify the sampling location, Federation staff will use their best judgement to sample your waterfront. The Federation will email your designated representative with results by Friday morning. If the analysis detects Enterococci counts greater than 104cfu/100 ml, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends avoiding water contact. Each week, data will also be posted on the Federation website, Facebook page, and the free Swim Guide App.
Citizen Scientist Discount
If you or a neighbor would like to become a citizen scientist for your community, we will arrange a training session to orient you to sampling protocol. The volunteer(s) will be responsible for collecting and delivering samples to the Federation office or designated field station (TBD) by 12pm each Wednesday. For your participation, your community will receive a $25 discount.
The testing cost is still only $475 for 15 samples collected from May 26th through September 1st, 2021.
